Led by RESA's Literacy Team, Reading Beyond the Elementary Classroom is a series of three workshops designed for 6-8 ELA teachers and those who support them to ensure all students become proficient, motivated, and critical lifelong readers through comprehensive literacy instruction.
September 1: My Students Don't Read! is the first in the RESA 6-8 Literacy Series. This workshop will build an understanding of the foundations of reading, discuss helping students build reading identities so they become readers who choose to read. The importance of independent reading as a critical part of classroom instruction is emphasized.
October 6: Conferring in the Secondary Classroom is the second in Okefenokee RESA's 6-8 Literacy Series. In this workshop, we discuss the impact of the use of reading conferences as a vital part of the ELA classroom, the different types of conferences, managing the process, and how to best coach readers.
November 3: Why Don't They Understand? is the third in Okefenokee RESA's 6-8 Literacy Series. In this workshop, we will delve into the complex world of comprehension and explore how we can support readers to have a deep understanding of the fiction and nonfiction texts they encounter.
